Autos for Audis
A couple of recent posts referred to the 5000 auto tranny as being of poor
design and performance ... I won't argue that point but seeing as I've got
one in my daily-driver '87 5000 and it's leaking to the point that I leave
a drip-pan under the car to keep from spoiling the driveway and add a pint
or so of ATF every month, I think it'll soon be time to rebuild or replace
it.
Although I am not looking for ultimate performance from this car (which is
why I bought that wrecked '91 200tqw to rebuild), I've been thinking about
swapping the final drive for either the 3.73 or 3.90 that was used back in
the early-80s turbos ... since my Bentley only covers the '84-'88 5000s, I
would appreciate it if someone could tell me which two-letter transmission
codes I should be looking for since most of the yards around here pull the
transmissions from the cars and store them separately hence there's no way
to tell which one is which ... the torque-converter codes would be nice to
have as well, if possible.
As always, thanks in advance for any help.
