Introduction & questions

     Audi enthusiasts:

My name is Jerry Fields. I am new to this group, and have a few
questions regarding a 1987 Audi 5000 CS Turbo 4 door sedan with
automatic transmission.. (Not a Quattro.) There are about 103K miles
     on the odometer.

I may purchase this Audi. Having read most of the archives, I am aware
of the mechanical weak points; the hydraulic pump and lines, steering
rack, transmission oil seal, power window switches, "interesting"
electronics and Bentley manuals. I do most of my own work, so most of
this doesn't bother me a great deal, as long as I am aware of the work
needed. I find the exchange of ideas and technical information posted
to this list to be interesting.

What I haven't seen in the files I've looked at: Is the 5000 worth a
purchase price of $2,200.00 as a family car and part time commuter? I
drive about 65 miles per day, and put an average of 23,000 miles a
year on my car. (I commute on a motorcycl during good weather.) This
particular Audi has a bad high pressure hydraulic hose, and I have not
yet done the test drive. The nearest dealer is about 50 miles away,
and I will trailer the car in for an inspection before I make a final
     decision.

I think the car has beautiful lines, and the body and interior are in
excellent condition. When I fist saw it, side profile, I had to stop
and take a good look; I was impressed. After I sat in it, looked over
the controls, sat in the rear seat, I was even more impressed! Before
I buy, or don't buy, I would like to hear your opinions as to the
reliability, roadability, comfort, and use of this car as family
transportation. My past ownership has been in Ford, Pontiac, and
Toyota products; I have never owned an auto in this luxury class. My
best comparison is to my '84 Pontiac 6000, GM's intermediate size car
that shares most of the components with the Buick Century and
Chevrolet Celebrity. (Please don't laugh, I'm trying to be as honest
     as possible... :)

In short, I am after opinions, impressions, and stories. I'd like to
know why you own your Audis, why you like them so much, and any
information specific to the '87 5000 CS Turbo.

Thanks for reading this post. If you wish to answer me directly, I
will organize your answers and post the results here in a condensed
     form.
