IMHO, a better solution is the one that Ferrari uses. It's got a servo
to actuate the clutch and sensors in the stick to tell where you're moving
it and when it's in what gear. A computer works the clutch for you. A
demo they showed was to rev the car to redline and move the stick into
first. As soon as it's in, the clutch will release. The shift to second
just move the stick, when it feels pressure on it, the clutch goes in
and you can shift to second.
They say you get the fastest launch by just putting it in first and tromping
the gas though...

I got gasoline from 7-11 and my car stopped running. New gas, ran fine.
