Bob, I believe the five cyl. cars were governed bythe relay, as you
seemed to think. That relay, i think, also has ties to the ignition, as
far as being a trigger, but probably not as any control. When it cuts out
your fuel pump, even though there is fuel in the lines, there is no
pressure to push it, therefore the system will run for a split second off
the pressure stored in the accumulator and then die. My sequential
cut-off cuts spark to the cyl. one at a time so it's will sound as if
there is a miss as opposed to killing the motor entirely, which could be
dangerous. If you are full out in a corner and it cuts, you could lose
control as the car willshift because of the sudden loss of power
(unintentional throttle steer as it's better known).
BTW Earlier cars had a whizzy device in the rotors that cut-out due to
extreme centrifigul forces, but i don't think they make them anymore, at
least for the audis.
