Re: G-Charger
Bob....
This is your conscience speaking...this is your highest calling, you must
not fail, not fail, not fail. Install the G-60. You will be ascribed the
title of Master by an adulating horde of followers.
Seriously, this is something that should be tried. And if someone figures
it out, a 'package' could be developed & marketed. But I think it's going
to be tricky.
Some things to consider are the mounting brackets, the boost control valve
(throttle in front of the throttle) and linkage, the fact that some boost
regulation is done thru the idle air valve, and little oddities like the
volume of lubricating oil being regulated by the length of the oil feed line.
I'll bet the 20v 4 cylinder will be a natural for this conversion if the
block retains the old mounting holes.
One of my guys has factory info on the basic trivia & operation of the G-60
that I'm sure he'll share if you're interested.
I have a G-60 drivetrain with Neuspeed upgrades in an A2 GTI and I can't
emphasize enough how hard & fast this engine turns on. For example, the
original design brakes won't lock up at any speed w/ 215 60 15 rubber, but
1st gear will break the tires loose at any rpm, and with the handbrake on
from a stop I can burn both tires 80+ feet in ***2nd gear***. The computer
pulls the plug at 6200 rpm, but the power band is virtually the same from
3000 on up (better at 6200 if anything) and that's with cat, oxs sensor &
great emissions.
Getting the thing to work on a 5 cyl block looks to me like a call for
genius. Where is Jim Healey when you need him? :)
