More '84 5kS ?'s

Second question. The climate control in the '84 is shot. The LED display
doesn't even come on anymore, and the thing cranks heat constantly (read heater
control valve open, fan on high ALWAYS.) It was around 100 out in
Denver/Boulder/Ft. Collins last week, and I was driving around and roasting, so
I yanked the blower motor fuse and duct-taped the heater control valve closed.
I'm going to rip the whole climate control mess out of that heap and put in a
cable operated system to replace it. Anyone ever done this? Unless I can find
a slick way of hooking up the vents, I'm just going to jimmy-rig the vents to
have the air come out the defroster vents and the floor vents, just like a
heater would. A/C in that car hasn't worked in five years, so I'm not too
worried about fooling with it, just a simple cable to the heater contlor valve
(got one that is cable operated already) and a knob to control the blower fan
speed. I'm guesing I can get this setup from a dead pre-'84 5000 or any 4000.
Anyone with any knowledge on this? I'm not too keen on spending the required
$ to fix the current computer nonsense that's in there now! TIA for any
suggestions.
