I had a similar problem on the '84 5kS. That thing kept on eating exhaust
pipes, couldn't figure out why. Finally replaced the whole system, and found
the problem (part of it, anyways.) The rack had been leaking for about two
years before I let it run dry for another year. Three years worth of soaking
in hydraulic fluid destroyed the rear transmission mounts. This allowed the
motor to rock forward and backward, which caused the converter to slam into the
floorboards if you acceleratied hard or used the transmision to slow the car
down. Replaced the two mounts (about $50 a shot) and no more clunking.
