We just had the "2nd Band Servo Seals" changed on my parent's '87 5kS.
Seems that these transmission seals are situated very close to the hot
exhaust pipe, therefore the rubber seals become hard and brittle. What was
happening with our car was that it would not shift into cruising (3rd?)
gear until after about 5-10 miles and the car was warmed up. If the car
was cold, it would stay in second gear.
Anyways, to answer your price question, it cost $25 for the set of seals
(another Audi ripoff; includes 3-5 O-rings) and I had a friend of mine
install them for $75. He used to be the master Audi technician at the
dealer for about 10 years, so he knows his stuff. And his asking price was
a little better than the dealer's "well, it might run 'ya about $500 or so,
unless it's real bad then you might need a new transmission."
After this repair, the car shifts wonderful now. Seems like a new tranny,
without the expense... :)
