Battery drain on '87 5kS

Well, once again I look to the list for help with a problem on my parent's
Audi. Here's the scoop:

We just installed a brand-new DieHard battery, but there is some type of
drain somewhere. The car might start, then we drive it around a bit and
then turn it off. If we try and start it later, the starter just makes a
clicking noise. We then hook up some jumper cables (this part is getting
very old very quickly), and without even starting the other car, the Audi
starts right up. It's like it loses just barely enough voltage to keep it
from starting. In fact. the radio and all lights work fine, it just won't
start. My car ('88 5kCST) was doing the same identical thing about a month
ago, and I too had just installed a brand-new DieHard. I took my battery
to Sears and they tested it and charged it over the weekend and said the
battery was good, so who am I to argue. My problems have since
disappeared...

Anyways, back to the '87. Yesterday we were using it to jump start another
car (no, not an Audi :) and the thing would almost die when we turned the
ignition on the other car. It didn't even have enough power to start the
other car. And the night before, we hooked up a battery charger to fully
charge the battery, hoping that might do the trick. Well, in the morning
it started right up, and we drove to work, but a few hours later I went out
to start it and...you guessed it - clicking noise.

Anyone ever had this problem before? Could I be looking at possible
alternator and/or starter repairs? Let me know if any of you have any
ideas. TIA...
