this doesn't work for the newer cars (no fuse on the fuel pump relay), but
years ago, i read a tip for VWs to use a smaller fuse on your relay--instead
of the 8a fuse, use a 5a fuse (or some such smaller size--don't recall all
the details).  when the pump started blowing this with regularity, time to
change!  this let the car tell you when to change the pump rather than
constantly testing it or dealing with the garbage down the fuel line.
