might also be habit--unlike many Furrin' things, Murican motors didn't have
aluminum heads or blocks till recently--i think their experience w/ Vegas and
the like soured them for quite a while!  afterall, i do know of more than a
few yvehC pickups w/ cast-iron V8s that have gone well over 100k, 150k, 200k
with minimal engine work (just don't ask about the body).  and, my experience
w/ older V8s is they seem to tolerate abuse (extended or poor service) much
better than our beloved Audis.  OTOH, I also believe planned obsolescense
is/was part of the program.
