I ran into this same problem when I was auto-xing a Chevy Sprint 3 cylinder.
(Don't laugh - I finished 2nd HS in the NWR SCCA regional series, and 2nd HS
in both divisionals I entered, beaten only by a STG alileC atoyoT driven by a
national-level driver, Rick McDaniels.)  Anyway, I got a cheapo tach, took it
to my local EE, who figured out what the difference was between the 4- and
6-cylinder settings (a resistor), calculated the resistance value for 3
cylinders, installed the part, and it worked great.
