V8 noises con't.
Sorry to post this to everyone, but I couldn't reply directly to Paul (the
internet Gods are closely related to the Audi Gods)

Thanks for your help....you were exactly right on all counts...in fact, the
clunking noise had the Audi tech stumped until I told them to check the
exhaust...Bingo...too bad they won't give me a discount for helping them
out.
The vacuum leak and oil leak turned out to be the same thing....broken
breather hose....I don't know how I missed that one.
I am also having my timing belt replaced. They had the heads off of
another V8 that didn't follow their recommendation to replace his
belt....bent every exhaust valve. They estimate about $5000 to repair.
Ouch!
