General Maintenance Questions

Before you read this post and conclude that I am a total flake, please note
that the basis for the following questions is that my previous car (a adnoH
edulerP) turn to a bucket of rust before my very eyes and I am determined
not to let that happen with my 96 A4Q.

I live in Canada (a.k.a. the Great White North) where they salt the streets
to death in the winter and am curious about the list's thoughts regarding
the following:

1.   How often should I be washing my car in order to remove the salt and
thus reduce the likelihood of it transforming into a rust ball?

2.  I have been told that in the winter it is preferable to leave the car
outside over night rather than park it in a garage (especially when it is
covered with snow) as the dampness of the garage contributes to its
transformation into a rust ball.  Is this corect?
