You're right, you  probably wouldn't notice the loss in top octive 
response, especially since you sit way off axis of the speakers.  But you 
will notice a loss in sound quality none the less.  When you use an FM 
modulator, you subject the CD signal to the distortion and noise of the 
FM tuner.  Also, you're subjecting the signal to 2 more active circuts.  
Plus, these circuts alter the signal way more than should be acceptable 
(for CD).  The FM modulator is a great way to add CD with a minimum of 
hassle, but it aint perfect.  Audio is full of compromises.  In this case 
you compromise sound quality for convience.  In my book, that is totally 
unacceptable.  Actually, its not that much more convienent.  You save 
maybe an hour in install time, but after that, there's no difference in 
convience between the full in dash unit and the FM unit, except that you 
have to go through one more step (tuning the radio to the right 
frequency) with the FM mod. to play a CD.  To summarize, I think the FM 
route is a lose-lose situation.  Go with the in dash...its clearly the 
better alternative in the long run.
