The whole idea of the "head check," as they call it in driver's ed, is to
briefly glance into the blind spot to see if anyone is there, not to
confirm what you'r mirrors already told you. A brief glance to the side,
not over your shoulder, is all it takes. You only have to look long
enough to see if someone's there, not to see what make/year/model is
there.
The head check has saved my arse many a time, and I've gotten myself out
of many a potential accident because someone didn't look. If you don't
look when you change lanes, remind me not to be on the same road with you
8^).

Only 4 years out of driver's ed, and I actually remember some of the crap
they told me!
