intermittent auto-down feature

I've got a '91 200 Quattro 20v sedan and the auto-down feature has been 
acting up intermittently.  It must have heard how I'd been bad-mouthing the 
auto-up feature and decided to give me a lesson.  

Anyway, sometimes it works just fine.  Other times I have to hold the 
switch down just like a regular window switch to get the window to go down. 
It always works, just not the auto-down feature.
