I've had a number of similar lights (J C Whitney knockoffs) on various
vehicles. The only time I've ever had a cracking problem that couldn't be
blamed on impact was with some Cibie Bobi replacement headlights.
Tightening the retaining rings cracked the lenses. Keep in mind they do get
warm and probably the expansion/contraction cycle exacerbates any mounting
stress.

See if you can bamboozle that salesguy into a new set :-)
