Sorry I can't help you  identify the cause of the noise.  I can however tell
you that the V8 automatics have failed in the past.  How do I know?  Our V8
has a new transmision in it (put in by our mechanic BEFORE we bought it!);
Eliot's V8 has a replaced trans; maybe one other V8 list member as well.
Get it checked out before you buy it!  Used ones are hard to find and very
expensive.  Installation is a bear as well, with not many mechanics with
experience in doing this repair.  If the trans is bad, still buy the car,
but take at least $5000 off the price.
