I probably shouldn't open my mouth here but since I have autocrossed an '81
4000 to death and am (still!) in the process of having a full cage put into
my '85 4000, I have some experience in these matters.
Eric is right: performance-wise, I really don't think there'll be very much
benefit from a bolt-in cage. On the other hand, I also know that I started
breaking spot welds on my '81 4k after two seasons of autocrossing (75-plus
events with two drivers) and suspect that a cage might have helped keep the
car together a bit longer. As it was, I ended up junking it...
Personally, I think I'd go with a very cleverly designed welded-in roll bar
rather than a bolt-in cage if you're after stiffness ... either way, you're
looking at a custom job and a $1200-1500 bill if you want it done properly.
