Until recently, all Volkswagens with watercooled engines had the same
wheel fixing; four bolts with an M12 thread, spaced at a pitch circle
diameter (PCD) of 100mm. This was considered inadequate for the torque
developed by the 2-litre 16V and VR6 engines and so Volkswagens with
these engines use a different fixing, five M14 bolts, again at a PCD
of 1OOmm.
Early Beetles used five bolts, but this was changed to four M14 bolts
with a PCD of 130mm. This fixing was also used for the Type 3 and 4
aircooled Volkswagens, while the 181 (Trekker or Thing) used five M12
bolts at a PCD of 205mm, the same as early Beetles. This fixing was
also used for the early Volkswagen light commercials, but was later
changed to five M14 bolts at a PCD of 112mm, the same as bigger Audis.
All series I and II Audi 80s had the same fixing as Volkswagens, four
M12 bolts at a PCD of 1OOmm. This was also used for four-cylinder
series I Coupes so these wheels are largely (but, not entirely - see
the section about offset over the page) interchangeable with
those of Volkswagens.
The series II Audi 80 quattro, series III 80 and 90, five-cylinder
series I Coupes, series I and II 100s (except for quattro and Sport)
and the series III 80 and 90 all use four M14 bolts with a PCD of
108mm. The series II 1OO quattro and 100 Sport, the series IV 100s,
the A6, the Ur-quattro and Sport quattro, S2, S4 and S6 all use five
M14 bolts with a PCD of 112mm.

Hope that explanation helps.
