Dead instrument panel lights - now fixed

Thanks to all those who gave me suggestions of causes of my dead
instrument panel lights. The problem was that the back lighting on
the main instrument panel, auxiliary dials and heater controls had
died. This is in an 1989 Audi Coupe 2.2E.
On further investigation I found that all three heater control bulbs
had blown, but the rest were still in tact. I found the cause to be
the rheostat (in the main instrument panel) that controls the
brightness.
I ordered a new rheostat from the local Audi dealer and fitted it last
weekend. I can now see how fast I'm driving in the dark.
