I'm not sure how similar the tranny's are, but my father and I had some
extra play in our Coupes.  On my father's car, it moved enough to hit
something when quickly downshifting into second or letting off the gas
in first too quickly. 

It turned out to be a rubber transmission mount that held the
transmission to the car.  The replacement unit was quite a bit beefier,
so Audi obviously realized they had a problem. 

Moral of the story:  check all transmission mounts.
