That gas smell

Remember the gas small I'd asked about?

Well the other day, a warm day in CT, I put in my new fuel pump.  And for those
who ever do this run the tank DOWN.  Way down to where the "E" is constant on.
Otherwise you better be friends with Lloyd bridges 'cause you're going diving.

Anyway that wasn't the smell and all is now quiet.

I decided to pull the rear wheels and check the rotors and pads.  As I'm
loosening the RR wheel I hear a shhhhhhh.  Then it stops.  And then agian
shhhhhhh.  I opened the gas door and from a hole/vent under the cap I hear the
shhhhhhh.  This is normal?  A timed release of gas fumes into the atmo?  Seems
odd.  What do you think.

What with the trick gas pump nozzels we have to prevent fumes escaping etc this
seems like an odd feature.
