you are correct - i meant 2nd stage (med speed) relay, which comes from the     
factory in gray and then turns into brown as it's toasting.                     
i have tried disconnecting the a/c hi pressure switch and the rad temp          
sensor (3-wire thermoswitch) which are the only two inputs to the 2nd stg       
relay and the fan will run as soon as i stick a relay into the socket (and      
wiggle it a bit - which may mean i don't get a connection until i wiggle it     
or that wiggling it causes a short within the relay panel - not sure what       
damage was done when the relay melted)                                          
the "leaky sensor" is dry inside the boot and i think the stuff that's leaking  
is actually coming out the reinforcement fibers in the hose!  (doesn't appear   
to be the sensor threads, the hose connection nearby or the sensor housing      
itself - btw i can't find this 6-wire sensor in the schematic)                  
i'll test the resistor pack next.
