FYI, I had good look at a "cutaway" A8 body in Germany over a year ago. It is
comprised of alluminium stampings, extrusions and castings. Most of the
stampings were bordered/reinforced by extrusions (jointed by long welds- too
beautiful to cover).The extrusons terminated into heavy-duty castings. It
seemed evident that they had designed sacrificial parts (extrusions) that would
be cut off and re-welded into the castings. In other words, you fix this car
with a recip saw and some expensive new parts.
