Chances are your mechanics are correct. I've replaced a million of these 
on both VWs and Audis (they are common to both vehicles). I've heard of 
rebuild kits but never tried them. New calipers are $$$$, rebuilt ones 
of questionable origins are about $90 apeice. One thing I noticed about 
the cars that needed new calipers was brake fluid that had never been 
changed.
