Crutchfield Adapter Failed
Apologies to those of you who have been waiting for the results of
this exercise......
I have been trying to get one of Crutchfield's high-end ($90 is high-
end for me) adapters to work with a Sony XR-5500 deck to replace my
Bose radio head unit. The final report is: "I ain't-a gonna do it;
wouldn't be prudent."
I sent my Bose radio to Crutchfield for them to bench test in an
attempt to eliminate residual hiss and a loud pop every time I turned
off the radio. After three weeks, I decided they'd had the radio
long enough, and called and told them that either the new adapter was
going into my car that weekend - or the adapter would be returned and
I'd simply bypass the Bose amps and run the radio speaker outputs
direct to the speaker contacts. So come on guys, deliver!!
Good news: In four days, I had my radio back with a new adapter. Bad
news: the plastic bag I put around the radio had not been opened, and
the adapter sent was identical to the first one I received.
I tried the new one and hiss WAS lower, but there's still a loud POP
every time I turn the radio off. NO DICE. The adapter goes back and
I'm wiring around the Bose amps, which is really easy to do. All
I'll do is unplug the amp leads and run the speaker wires direct to
the speaker terminals after pulling the Bose leads off those
terminals. Should take about two hours this weekend.
In fairness to Crutchfield, I will say their technical staff was
consistently and unfailingly helpful and patient while working with
me. They really do the best job of anyone I've done biz with as far
as phone support. BUT - if they're going to ask for my radio to
"tweak" an adapter for me, three weeks is long enough! They didn't
deliver - all they did was ship a little newer adapter. This time
they didn't follow through. End of story.
