fia class 2 racing:
homologation is 25,000 for the body (ie they must be used by the manufacturer in it's model range and have 25,000 produced), with a limit of 2,500 for mechanical components.
2 litre engines. can be sleved (as bmw did initially) down to 2l. 8,500 rev limited. no special materials etc. engines have a 2,500 unit homologation so are production based. no engines in excess of 6 cylinders (the majority are 4 cylinder units). no forced induction is allowed (ie turbos or supercharging). the engine must remain on the same axis as in the road car - ie transverse or in-line - but may be moved a small way backwards or forwards and lower. unleaded fuel must be used and catalytic converters are compulsory. there are also noise limits.
transmission is race spec, usually sequential shift, 6 speeds gearbox. usually xtracs or david brown. no auto's.
suspension is race-spec from production pickup points (allowed 25mm latitude in location). brakes are iron, race-spec.
body is standard, with race-spec splitter/air dam front, spoiler rear. homologation is 25,000 units. max length is 4.2 m.
audi's advantage seems to be mainly in strong engines, quattro, and very effective suspension. it seems that audi have devised a front suspension system which effectively gives them a full double wishbone setup. this was what was appealed against (successfully) 2 rounds ago. the appeal was eventually disallowed when audi showed that the fia had approved the setup last year (prior to the world cup). as a result of this, a number of other teams will likely go the same route.
also the quattro a4's carry a significant weight penalty of 40kgs over fwd cars while rwd cars have to carry 25kgs over fwd cars. currently limits are 1000kg for front-wheel drive, 1025kg for rear-wheel drive and 1040kg for four-wheel drive. driver weight is included.
interestingly, due to the runaway success of the a4's, the btcc looks likely to *increase* the weight penalty of the a4's to close up the racing. best guess is that the audis will go to 50-60kgs up on the fwds and 25-35kgs up on the bmws.....
