      I responded yesterday with a little more detail, but 
      I think the response got zapped. (bbs problems) Check
      the wire that goes from the back of the alternator, 
      through the firewall and into the back of the instrument
      cluster. When this wire got loose on my former, now
      wifes '84 5KS I experience the same problems you're 
      having.

      Hope it's this...I KNOW all too well how exasperating
      these kind of problems can be.
