My '88 5kCST has had this same problem for about a year now.  I replaced the
original compressor with one from a boneyard, and it always makes the same
exact noise you describe.  You are the first person I have found that has
the same problem, or can even notice it for that matter.

Bad news for you though...I believe you might have a bad compressor, as mine
works now for about 10 minutes, then stops.
