I hate to play devil's advocate but I have heard plenty enough Audi V6
bashing from various sources.

I have a 5000S Turbo that has the turbo five and a new A4Q that has the
V6. For me the jury is still out on the reliability aspect of the V6
vs. the I5 (many of the basic componentry are the same, BTW, the V6 is
basically a shorter (and 2-valve) version of the V8, which itself is two
VW 4-cylinder engines simesed together, and we all know the common
heritage between the VW four and the Audi five...). However, one thing
I will say is that the V6 is a hell of a lot smoother and quieter than
the five. There is simply less vibration and seems happier to rev.
The refinement of the V6 is not something that is easily quantifiable
but it is something that you hear and feel everyday.

The V6 172hp may not be earth shattering, but when coupled to a manual
transmission in the A4Q it does move with authority, especially when
given time to break in. I will grant you that the normally aspirated
engines will be inherently less "tweakable" for added horsepower, but if
you aren't planning to do something like that then it's not a concern.
