Paul,

I have had experience with Audi's for over 15 years and it is common for them
to wear valve guides as the were designed with a very short guide and have
heavily rated valve springs.
If your smoke comes when accelerating after a period of deceleration it is
possibly wear in the guides and valve stems. However, generally smoke when
accelerating is due to ring wear.
Cost? I wouldn't have a clue for you, although in Australia to recondition a
4 cylinder head would be about $1200.00 or roughly 600 pounds bythe exchange
rate but parts prices and labour rates might be different. If you find out
how much I would be interested to know.

I'm not sure if Sam mean't me in his mail but seems how I mentioned it
earlier This will probably help anyway.
