Re: Re: Valve guides

don't agree here. While the original 1.6L 4 cylinder did have short valve
guides and consequent wear problems, exacerbated when some folks used too
good a valve stem seal (prevents oil from lubricating valve stem/valve
guide). this was much improved with the bigger 1.8L 4 cylinder (and thus
2.2L 5 cylinder) engines. The '85 4k 4 cylinder is the 1.8L and, properly
treated, should last much more than 80k miles. We've had 2 Rabbits and 5
Audis in the family in the last 18 years, and except for oneof the Rabbits,
no valve guide problems.
Sure they made them longer but there still too short. The most common engine
wear problem I have had to fix is Valve stems and guides on all models of
Volkswagens and Audis all through the range. The 1600 wear out quicker also
because people tended to overrev them to make up for the low gear ratios
used. Just a footnote: I have hardly any trouble with wear in the bottom ends
especially crankshaft and bearings unless they have in excess of 250,000 km.
