Hints on CV removal?

Found a dry rotted CV boot when I ripped the front suspension off my '87 5kTQ.
Figured since I had everything already out of the way (read the driveshaft was
sitting on the subframe & that's it) it would be a good time to R&R the thing.
After about an hour of hammering, it's still on there. Mr. Bentley says
something about an internal circlip, which I sorta found (I think) and tried to
expand while a buddy hammered on it (thanks for the help, Cello.) Tried the
"if ya can't get it off, use a bigger hammer" technique too, and it's _still_
on there. Any hints on what I may be doing wrong before I take the driveshaft
off & bring it to someone who may have a clue on how to fix it? Actually
driving the car somewhere is _not_ an option, incedentally...
