Check Engine light angst

I am engine fault-code illiterate, but had a flickering Check Engine light 
problem with my '92 100CSQ wagon when running hot that cropped up at about 
45,000 miles.  Turned out to be a bad engine bearing (ouch!), the first my 
mechanic had seen in years of working on the 2.8L V6.  Uncle Audi did all the 
work gratis, and almost three years later at 142,000 miles, the engine and 
car continue to perform beautifully.  Good luck . . .
