Many years ago, a friend bought a magnetic drain plug for his Mini Cooper.

A couple of days later, I was underneath a rally car while he was discussing 
this purchase with a factory rally engineer.  The latter's opinion was - if the 
drain plug magnet catches anything, it's already too late. 

I _have_, however, seen rally engines with small Eclipse ALNICO magnets bolted 
to the inside of the sump.  This was years ago - I've no idea if it does 
anything.
