I have a copy of the original Audi technical training manual for the V8's and 
the engine, fully dressed is ~400lbs (I don't have the book handy, right Eric)  
with the block weighing in at ~60lbs.  I think it mentioned that it was 
extremely light for a V8 and it is also very compact.  Possibly both reasons.
