RE: 90 Coupe Quattro - Bad ECU
I have some experience w/ buying and swapping ECU's in my 89 100.
There are two ECU's one is the fuel injection ECU and another is the
ignition ECU.
The fuel injection ECU is easily accessed in the front passenger
footwell...this is the one I have experience with.
The ignition ECU is in the drivers footwell.
Swapping the FI ECU is a five minute job in the 89 100. The local Audi
dealer wanted to charge $50 to swap it.
The ignition ECU looks more difficult to access.
I recently got the ALLDATA CD w/ technical service bulletins.
There is a technical Service Bulletin which applies to the following models:
All with CIS-E III Fuel/injection system, 1988-91
It is titled "Poor Driveability or Code 2132", dated MArch 31, 1991
It says it is important that both ECU's be matched.
The TSB implies that some cars had ECU's mis-matched at the factory.
The TSB includes a listing of various models and ECU part numbers.
Be careful if you buy a used ECU...there is more than one part number that
could be used in your car but both ECU's need to be matched correctly.
This is a problem for me. I bought a used FI ECU for about $200 and it
seemed to work OK but now it seems to be malfunctioning and it can't report
fault codes the way it should.
This leads to a question...why did the first one go bad, and why is the
second one now on the blink?
I'm not aware of anything that happened to cause a voltage surge, etc.
It would seem that a dealer would be able to swap the ECU to see if it helps
without forcing you to pay if it doesn't. Unfortunately, the dealers here
don't keep these in stock and don't offer this simple check.
FWIW, I think the TSB's on the ALLDATA CD are a great benefit to have available.
