The son of the GT40's designer was interviewed on television last week. He
said that there were 12 factory GT40s built, and he knew where all 22 were.

Probably not, because it's a German book and most of the rally successes were
by English-prepared cars. Two of the Lombard RAC rally winning cars, for
instance, were _NOT_ Audi works team cars. One was bought from the private
allocation but only ever driven in competition, and one was built up from a
floor pan.

Historic Motorsport has also rebuilt some of the "destroyed" competition cars.
I don't think the factory's view of things is entirely accurate.

As I said, David Sutton is more of an expert than me. His "toybox" in Daventry
(S1, A2, several Sports, etc.) is well worth a visit.
