BTW, the car is a 1990 200 10V Turbo.
Well, I checked the thermo switch located on the radiator. It checked out
ok.
I checked another thermoswitch where the upper radiator hose connects to the
engine block. Checked out ok.
I checked the two relays in the relay box and they were fine.
I then checked the third relay in the aux. relay box and it checked out
fine.
There are 3 black wires coming off of the radiator fan and one brown wire.
The brown wire should be wired to the third relay in the relay box. I
ohmed out that connection and found it was broken. I had already spent four
hours on the car and was ready to have the dealer diagnose the problem. I
didn't have any more time and/or patience to try to find the break. I
wasn't even sure if I was reading the wiring diagram correctly. On top of
that, I got a mean case of poison ivy this weekend and trying to work on the
car with poison ivy was difficult at best. I took the car to the dealer.
Sure enough - after 1.5 hours of labor and no parts - the dealer found a
broken wire and charged 62.00. I feel lucky.
The other problem I wrote about concerned my radio being in 'SAFE' mode.
The factory radio has been replaced twice and each time the dealer printed
the code on the receipt. I never received another card with the code on it.
When I went to program in the number I was using the code from the first
replacement radio instead of the second. It finally dawned upon me what I
was doing wrong. I went to my Audi receipt folder (getting thicker all the
time) and found the receipt with the correct radio code. The radio works
fine now.
Two problems - two solutions - total cost: $62 - probably about the cheapest
this car will ever cost me.
