Need tire recommendations
Folks,
I have been off the list for a while and apologize if I'm treading
(pun intended) on ground that has been recently covered here. If
some good relevant data has been posted recently, maybe someone
could forward it to me. I searched the archives without much
success.
I have a 1988 5kS that needs new tires. The car currently has
185/70R14 tires, which I believe is the factory recommended size
but seems awfully small to me. I can't afford new rims at this
time but would like to know the biggest tire that will safely
and comfortably fit on the stock rims. 205/70R14???
I currently have Goodrich Advantage T/A's, or something like that
(can't remember exactly what they're called), and they seem pretty
crappy performance-wise. I'd like to get a higher performance
tire, but must be pragmatic and go for the all-season variety.
So I'd like something with the best combination of dry and wet
performance, tread life, and price. All of these criteria are
important, although dry performance maybe edges out the others.
Finally, I would like recommendations for vendors. I'm willing
to go the mail-order route if there is an advantage. Among the
retail chains where I can buy tires in person, which one is the
best?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
