As far as lifetimes of mufflers/tailpipes, they are holding up just fine
on my '90 Coupe Quattro which has 106,000 miles on it, mostly in  the
heavily salted Pittsburgh area.  Car was put on the road in July '89 
accd'g to the owner's manual.  Exhaust is still original except for rear
muffler; this only had to be replaced when the dopey rubber donuts broke
and allowed the  rear muffle to hag down to the point the driveshaft wore 
a hole in the pipe forward of the muffler.
