Andrew,
How simply can I put this? The four light swap you're talking about is a
direct swap. You will need both headlight assemblies from the '84 and
earlier car (this has the small side marker built in), the front grill, and
the old three prong type headlight connectors (4 of them). That's it.
There is a rubber trim hiding piece on you '89 and three chrome or body
color flat trim pieces that sit on top of the bumper. You will retain and
reuse these. This is a very easy swap. If you are as careful as I am, it
will take you about 4 hours. If you wanted to crank it out, you could do it
in half that.
The four rectangular head light assemblies can be had at a wrecking yard.
'84 and older 5ks are being driven onto these lots without damage. They'er
worth more in parts than a whole. You would then need to buy four
rectangular euro headlights. The Hella units are available at most offroad
stores. Throw in a couple of relays and some 10 gauge wire, and you've
completed the project.
Good luck.
