How to keep the dealer honest?

It happened to me, and turned out to be the brake carrier (saddle, in German) 
bolts.

Four new bolts.

On level ground, drive forwards gently and brake.  Then reverse, cut the
engine and radio and brake again.  Worn bolts produce a small click as
the carrier moves in a plane it shouldn't.  Reverse again and brake - no
click.  Forwards gently and brake - click.  Carrier bolts.
