Here's my .02 to add fuel to the fire - 

I also was plagued with noisy lifters, until recently.  I now have a new
head, head gasket, exhaust manifold repair (had 2 cracks), new valve
stem guides, new water pump and new radiator.  Same lifters went back
in, although 3 had been replaced a few months ago.

Lifter noise is now gone!  

I hadn't experienced any other problems other than the annoying noise,
and don't have any performance gain.
