I was at Schaumburg Audi last night to pick up the UBERWGN after they
straightened the wheels out (hit a bad pothole at speed in Chicago,
cost me $400 to fix the resulting vibration) and here's what they
said:

1. Manual transmission 1.8T will be available from them early next
year, say February or March time frame. Automatic transmission models
will be earlier, maybe before year end.

2. Very chip tunable, they expect to be able to come close to 300 HP
although that's probably more than just a chip. Obviously anything the
dealer does to the car will not void the warranty the dealer is
backing.

3. Very cheap, dealer invoice should be under 25k initially for a
base 1.8T with the quattro drivetrain. That's an "introductory" price
to build market share, it will certainly shoot up the following year,
maybe even later in 97. From comparison to the 1996 prices, it looks
like they're holding the prices steady for 1997 and not charging extra
for the 1.8T engine!? This is unbelievable to me, if it's true it's an
offer that just can't be passed up.

Even though I leased an S6 Avant in Dec 95 before they became
unavailable, I will certainly want to lease one of these as well for my
wife to drive. Maybe I'll even get her to drive the Avant instead once
in a while...
