If it's got to have an auto trans...?

Soon to be looking for a car for my son (his first). I'd like to put him in a
used Audi, but its got to have an auto. trans. I'm aware of problems with the
autos in mid to late 1980s 5000 models (had an 84). Wondering if
transmissions in the 4000s or coupes were any better. Did they improve in
later years with in 80s, 90s, or 100s?
