More '90 CQ steering help needed

Alright Ian! The ISV thing was kinda weird, but this is getting to be
a little much! I really think your #728 and my #857 formed some
kind of cosmic link on the boat ride across the pond back in '89. ;^)

O.K., O.K., so this isn't _exactly_ the same problem, but it _is_ a
steering problem. I've noticed a distinct groan while turning the wheel
hard (e.g., parallel parking).

I've got plenty o' Pentosin in the reservoir, but how can you tell the
correct level? My owner's manual says the stick on the cap should have
high/low marks, but mine just has a little white marshmallow on the end
of the stick.

I'm really hoping this isn't a bad rack. I guess that's why I'm putting off
crawling under the Fraulein to check. Any kind souls care to give me
some hints on what to look for?

Hey - like everyone else, my bomb is on its last legs, but that shouldn't
affect the steering, should it?

TIA
