Not surprised...in a past life (read before quattros) I was a 911 junky.
According to Bruce Anderson (P car tech guru ex of Garretson's, now of
Excellence mag) he has torn down many 3.0L 911SC motors in excess of 250k and
found said cross hatching in motors that were just well maintained as he put
it. Now, many of us that have these things (911's) don't wish to buy 12
quarts of synthetic every 2500 miles and hence run dino oil...Not to say that
synthetic oils don't have merit-cause they do-but that the excellent
engineering and manufacturing tolerances may have alot to do with this as
well in these types of motors.
While on the subject though...I have never run synthetic as I have always
understood that the interval should not be lengthened (I change I5 turbo oil
every 2500 and I5 NA oil every 3k) as the point of frequent oil changes is to
get the crud out that the oil attracts (naturaly and by design). I have also
been told that with these shorter intervals that there is very little problem
with dino oils breaking down and synthetic is not really a benefit unless
used to lengthen intervals. Now I never looked at it from the stand point of
what if I had to run the thing got very overheated as a lister (don't
remember who) meantioned the other day and it got me to thinking...should I
reconsidor my take on this? I do run Kendall GT1 and have it on pretty good
authority that it is one of the better dino oils...My 4ksq is 154k old and
runs real strong. Is there any benefit to switching it to synthetic now???
Just curious and TIA!

85 4ksq (and running great on dino oil)
